Jane Johnson was a dedicated educator and administrator who served Detroit Public School Children and their families for more than 30 years. A retired School Principal, she encouraged and supported the pursuit of education at all levels. In keeping with her dedication and commitment to education, she established the Jane Johnson Education Trust to provide annual merit scholarship awards for those family members in pursuit of higher or continuous education. The criteria and terms of the merit scholarship are explained below.
- Jane Johnson Educational Trust Scholarship Award – Applicant Criteria
- Applicant shall be related to Jane Johnson by blood or marriage;
- Applicant shall have 3.2 Grade Point Average for their prior three school years (or their final GPA from High School, if they are beginning their Freshman year in College);
- Applicant shall present Transcripts showing their prior educational grades, experience and achievements, and a copy of the letter of acceptance from the University, or other documentation indicating they are a student in good standing at the educational institution;
- Applicant must submit an application containing personal information required by the Scholarship Board, and must provide their social security number;
- Applicants may apply annually for additional scholarship awards;
- Applicants who have not reimbursed this Trust for awards which they no longer qualify for (as determined at the sole discretion of the Trustee) shall not be eligible to request awards in the future until non-reimbursed award money is reimbursed to this Trust.
- Terms of the Jane Johnson Educational Trust Scholarship Award
- Undergraduate students shall be awarded One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00) per year, paid directly to the eligible educational institution. Any award not used to pay for tuition or room and board at the eligible institution shall be returned to the Trust;
- Post-graduate students shall be awarded Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) per year. This award is a “book award” and shall be paid directly to the recipient student;
- lf the recipient student is studying overseas during that school year, an additional award amount of Four Hundred Dollars ($400.00) per year may be awarded upon request;
- The recipient student must sign a Contract of Understanding, created by the Scholarship Board;
- Eligible educational institutions include Colleges, Universities, Technical School, and Trade School;
- There are no minimum required credit hours;
- If the recipient student withdraws from class resulting in a revised tuition amount which is less than the award amount already paid, the difference in the two amounts must be returned to this Trust.

Please note: You are required to substantiate your blood relationship to Jane Johnson by “mapping” your connection to her on the foundational family tree document, also included. All documentation should be sent to the address shown below. If you are aware of other eligible family members that may not have been contacted, please feel free to forward copies of this letter and associated documentation.
